Based in Asia. Filming the World.
Laurie Gilbert was a member of a small team recruited by Network ten from an elite group within the television industry who had the expertise to represent Australia in providing the World Television Coverage of the sport of yachting at the 1988 Olympic Games .
In the preproduction period Laurie's expertise was invaluable in setting up cameras for the yachting coverage and the instruction of boat crews and others in the techniques of positioning and handling the camera boats not only for shooting the competition but in other techniques such as the helicopter film pickup which he pioneered.
In many ways I am grateful for laurie Gilbert's skills and expertise. he originated the design of the camera harnesses and their use in the camera boat cockpit and generally brought to the project all the elements of his craft consolidated during five months of very fine work at the America's Cup in Fremantle.
I must say that in accepting this assignment as a cameraman, Laurie was operating far below his potential as an organiser, producer and director of photography and many jobs that he has recently carried out in Korea. However the challenge was gladly accepted by him and I am grateful for his great assistance.
