The night of May 20th 1883 saw one of the best spectactular volcanic eruptions in modern history occur when the mountain of Krakatau erupted offshore from the straits between Java and Sumatra and the resulting geophysical forces wrecked chaos and devastation upon the local population.
36,000 people were to lose their lives in the following days as the mountain expelled magma flows, ash and searing clouds of gas across the narrow stretch of water separating Krakatau from the nearest coastal villages.
In this documentary/drama production by Pioneer TV of London, natural disaster specialist, Professor Bill Maguire explains the events that led up to the eruption and then graphically illustrates what happened to the local people when the mountain finally erupted.
The production uses both documentary presentation and dramatic recreation to investigate and explain the natural forces at work in an event like this one. A full, drama, camera team from London were responsible for all the live action sequences involving actors and special effects. LImage Cinematography was responsible for shooting all the presenter linking pieces with Professor Bill Maguire as he travelled through the islands of Java and Sumatra to the real locations where some of the most spectacular results of the eruption occurred.
